Google Play screenshot sizes by device type

Separate Google Play phone screenshot limits, large-screen guidance and other device requirements. Check formats, dimensions and recommendation criteria.

Google Play separates a listing’s general screenshot requirements from device-specific guidance and recommendation eligibility. Start with the device type: a valid phone screenshot is not automatically a suitable tablet, watch or XR screenshot.

Phone screenshots: technical minimums

The general screenshot specification accepts JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha. Each side must be between 320 and 3840 pixels, and the longer side must not exceed twice the shorter side. Provide at least two screenshots across supported device types for a listing; Google permits up to eight per supported device type.

For example, 1080 × 1920 meets these geometric limits. A raw 1080 × 2400 phone capture has a ratio greater than 2:1 and does not. Place that capture proportionally inside an appropriate listing canvas rather than stretching the interface.

Device-specific requirements and guidance

Device / assetDimensions or ratioWhat else to check
Phone320–3840 px per side; long side ≤ 2 × short sideJPEG or 24-bit RGB PNG without alpha. These general minimums differ from recommendation requirements.
Tablet / ChromebookGoogle’s large-screen guidance: 1080–7680 px; 16:9 landscape or 9:16 portraitAt least four screenshots of the large-screen app experience. Avoid added text outside the actual UI that may be cropped on Play homepages.
Wear OS / watch faces1:1; at least 384 × 384 pxAt least one current screenshot, app UI only. No device frame, extra text, masking or transparent background.
Android TVUse the device-specific section in Play ConsoleAt least one TV screenshot and a separate TV banner are required for TV distribution.
Automotive800 × 1280 portrait; 1024 × 768 landscapeWhen supplied: at least two of each orientation, generic system UI. Requirement depends on the app category; consult Google’s car guidance.
Android XR8:5; minimum 1920 × 1200, recommended 3840 × 2400Four to eight PNG/JPEG screenshots, up to 8 MB each.
Feature graphic1024 × 500Separate asset; JPEG or 24-bit PNG without alpha.

Google’s large-screen section allows dimensions beyond its generic 3840 px maximum. The checker labels tablet/Chromebook results against that specific guidance, not against the generic phone rule. The console’s device-specific validation remains the final upload check.

Recommendation eligibility is stricter

For screenshot-based recommendation placements, apps need at least four screenshots and games at least three. Use 16:9 landscape at a minimum of 1920 × 1080, or 9:16 portrait at a minimum of 1080 × 1920. Passing those image rules does not guarantee a recommendation placement.

Represent the actual app experience

Keep the interface current, readable and correctly oriented. Explain what is visible with alt text when uploading. Device-specific rules can prohibit surrounding artwork, so a decorative phone template should not be repurposed as a Wear OS asset.

The checker covers phone geometry, large-screen guidance and feature graphics. It does not validate TV, Wear OS, Automotive or XR files, screenshot counts or content. Read the feature graphic guide for that separate asset.
